CULTURAL IMMERSION EXPERIENCE

This part highlights my cultural immersion in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, where I embraced the richness of local traditions. I experienced the culture by trying different delicacies, learning new words and phrases, and visiting various places that reflect the community’s heritage. These experiences deepened my appreciation of Indonesian culture, broadened my perspective, and enriched my journey as both a learner and a future educator.

Moramo Waterfalls

As part of the program, my fellows and I had the chance to visit several places that offered both adventure and learning. On our first Saturday, we went to Toronipa Beach, where I tried the banana boat and donut ride for the first time—an exciting and memorable experience. I was amazed to see fishes swimming even near the shore. The following weekend, we explored Bokori Island, a stunning destination surrounded by clear waters and breathtaking views. Our last city tour took us to Moramo Waterfalls, where the 30‑minute walk to reach the falls was tiring yet refreshing, and the natural scenery left a lasting impression. These tours also gave us the chance to socialize with some of the teachers and our buddies, making the experience even more meaningful. I even grew close to a child—the daughter of Ma’am Ade’s cousin—who felt so attached to me that she would cry at night looking for me. Together, these experiences made the program enriching, unforgettable, and truly valuable for me.

Other than the scheduled city tours, we also had the unique opportunity to visit the villa of the Vice Dean, located on a mountain top, which offered a breathtaking view of the surroundings. During my free time on weekdays, I visited the Modern Regional Library Sulawesi Tenggara, where I gained insights into local knowledge, literature, and educational resources. We also explored the MTQ Tower, an iconic landmark in Kendari that symbolizes cultural pride. We were fortunate to visit multiple times, including during an event with the pupils of Lazuardi, where booths showcased local culture. We even witnessed soldiers parachuting and enjoyed visiting the booths. My fellow SEA teachers and I won a pin and Magnum ice cream at Kendari’s immigration booth, while the tourism booth took photos of us and gave books promoting local delicacies and tourist spots. Visiting MTQ at night was especially fun, with vibrant local products and food stalls. I was also lucky to witness the stunning view of Kendari’s long bridge illuminated with lights by the seaside boulevard. Beyond these, we also visited malls and batik stores, which added to the joy of discovery. These experiences not only brought adventure and happiness but also deepened my appreciation of Indonesian culture, broadened my perspective, and enriched my journey as a learner and future educator.
